"Hello everyone and welcome back to Gamereactor. Today we have a really exciting interview for you.
Because I'm here with not one, but two members of the Mortal Kombat 2 cast.
I'm here with the wonderful Adeline Rudolph and Tati Gabrielle, also known as Kitana and Jade."
"So first of all guys, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me.
It's an absolute pleasure to be here.
I wanted to start by just talking a little bit about video game adaptations, if that's fine.
Because we've seen them really boom and, you know, really become popular as of recent."
"Why do you think this is happening?
And how do you deal with the pressure of going into a role and playing such key characters?
And knowing there's this huge amount of pressure from the established fan base to expect you to deliver them so well?
Well first I think they're popular because they touch on the nostalgia of growing up."
"A lot of people want to be able to immerse themselves in a world that feels close to their childhood.
And something that just brings them back.
And so I think that's why they're popular, right?
Having said that, that also comes with a lot of pressure because there's expectations in place that have to be met."
"But it's welcomed, right?
I mean, as there should be that expectation.
You know, people have fed into these stories and into this world.
And so it is also on us creators to hopefully bring back that same sense of nostalgia and bring them right back."
"Yeah, and to add to that, I think too, when you play a video game, it's your ability to escape into a different world, right?
To play, to be someone else for a while.
And I think that bringing that into film, it brings you a step closer to that.
Seeing it in real life, seeing real people, you get an even more tangible sense of that immersion."
"And yeah, to Addie's point, definitely, yeah, with the iconic nature of characters such as these, it does bring a bit of pressure.
But at the same time, it brings a bit of freedom.
Because these characters have not been seen in this vein or in this light before.
So it's like you're introducing something to somebody in a new way, in a more grounded way, in that more human way that they can connect to."
"Why they've come into a cinema to see the thing that they've been playing on their screen for ages.
Yeah.
And Kitana and Jade are two pretty big characters.
I think many of the Mortal Kombat fans are going to be really excited to see on the big screen."
"What steps did you take to ensure that your versions of the characters felt authentic and faithful to the video game variants?
Oh, I think literally going back into the video games and really drawing from the pre-existing lore, right?
Marrying what is in the lore that exists, even though there's of course, so, I mean, we could spend years going through it."
"But really taking the pieces that were imported and incorporating them into the movie version.
And then on top of that, again, us as humans bringing the human element to this fictional world that is so massive and gigantic.
And really stripping it back to a more relatable emotional tie.
Ditto. I think, yeah, beautifully said."
"I don't think that there's, yeah, just research and yeah, just trying to make them feel as alive as possible.
Well, just a final thing. Very, very quick.
You've fought lots of people in Mortal Kombat 2.
Is there any particular fighter you'd like to fight in a potential third Mortal Kombat film?
I said this before, Cole Young."
"Honestly, I, oh, there's so many.
I mean, listen, in the games, there's a lot of, there's a lot that goes on also with like Kitana and Liu Kang, for example.
So I think there's a world where that could be really interesting.
I mean, personally, I'd also love to fight or, you know, dance with Joe Taslim."
"So that would be, if I could have a Sub-Zero on there, I would welcome that.
Anyone, really.
